Assignment Five, Option 2:
Drawing Figures
Monday 5 July 2010
Course work: A transitional day: I reviewed my work in Assignment Two and reviewed the Assignment Two text. I plan to repeat a few of the Assignment Two exercises before starting the Assignment Five work. Accordingly, I did three two-minute sketches, which did not turn out well, perhaps in part owing to my having tried to fit three onto one page. It almost seems as though I never did the work in Assignment Two. It appears clear that I will have to expand my preliminary work before commencing the Assignment Five exercises.
Reading:
Gilles Néret Lempicka
Taschen, Köln, 2007
Pp. 7-76
(This slender, heavily-illustrated volume provides a useful overview of the life and work of Art Deco artist Tamara Lempicka. I like some of what she did, though by no means all. Her paintings of women are on the whole far more empathetic than those of men, and her combination of elements of cubism with portraiture is intriguing. I must look up her teacher André Lhote.)
Personal sketchbook work: A sketch in red chalk and graphite of a somewhat bedraggled coneflower.
Total time: 1 hour 21 minutes
